Quando o rico industrial Thornton Melon (Rodney Dangerfield) resolve fazer uma visita de surpresa a seu filho Jason, na escola, fica surpreso ao constatar que a função dele na equipe de natação é apenas de recolher toalhas e arrumar o vestiário. Para mudar a situação de seu filho e, ao mesmo tempo melhorar sua instrução, ele se matricula como estudante. Mas Thornton resolve encarar a escola de maneira bem diferente, se divertindo e usando seu dinheiro para "lubrificar" as engrenagens do ensino. Desde que dinheiro não seja problema, porque não contratar especialistas da NASA para ajudá-lo com as aulas de física e dar uma mega festa com a presença do Oingo Boingo tocando "Dead Man’s Party"?
